International rower Steve Cox said he was delighted to join the “inspiring” Sportside family as one of our first ambassadors.
Army Commando Steve 28, based in Oxford, is hard at training for the 2020 Olympics where he aims to compete for his home country Zimbabwe.
The single sculler is also flying the flag for Sportside to grow our community and build our local global sports club.
He said: “I am delighted to be joining Sportside as an ambassador. Sport has helped me achieve so many goals…ot only as an international rower but as an Army Commando.
“I hope that by bringing people together Sportside will inspire more people to participate, which is good for the physical and mental health of the nation.
“Sport has enabled me to push through barriers that I never thought possible.
“I would like others to share the benefits that sport has brought me and I support the Sportside vision of encouraging more people to participate.”
Steve, who rows out of Molesey Boat Club, has competed at junior and under 23 levels for his country at world championships.
For the last 14 years he has rowed thousands of kilometres in training in the chase for a place at the Olympics.
He said that Sportside was key to breaking down barriers that prevent people participating in sport.
“Making connections in new places is always a challenge and I think Sportside will help eliminate such barriers, by supporting people to connect to disciplines that they love or perhaps connecting people to something new.’’
Xan Varmuza CEO and founder of Sportside welcomed Steve as one of our first ambassadors.
He said: “Steve is the perfect role model and we are delighted to welcome him aboard at the beginning of our exciting journey to bring the world closer through sport.”
