Hey Bao, great to have you onboard with us at Sportside – your videos have entranced us, and we are looking forward to seeing what the future holds! Are you able to tell us a little bit about what you do and some more about your background?

Thanks for having me! Yeah, I have a YouTube channel called Learn How To Dance, and as you can tell from the name, people can learn how to dance on my channel through my tutorials.

Yes, so you are the man behind the Learn How To Dance YouTube channel. Is dancing something that you have always been interested in?

Well, it depends on what you mean by “always”. I wasn’t really interested in dancing until I was 16. It was actually a dance movie called “You Got Served” that kind of inspired and motivated me to start dancing. Back then it was just something I thought was really cool and just wanted to learn it to impress the girls, haha. Now, over the years dancing has become a lot more to me, and now I’m doing it full time.

Amazing, and how long have you been dancing?

I’ve been dancing for over 15 years now, and I will never stop! Well, maybe professionally at some point, yes, but I will always be that guy on the dance floor that dances non-stop and won’t leave until you throw him out, haha.

You’re clearly incredibly talented. Where did you learn how to dance like you do?

When I started dancing, I lived in a small town where there were no good dance schools. So in the beginning, I had to learn on my own. I tried to copy the dance moves from dance movies, music videos and just whatever I saw that was cool. I then started watching dance tutorials on YouTube and tried to learn as much as possible on my own.

As soon as I finished my Upper Secondary School (gymnasium) I then moved to the capital city to get some proper training, and I took a 1-year intensive dance programme where I got my skills up to a professional level. I have since just taken a lot of classes from many many different teachers from all over the world to advance my skills.

What inspired you to take your talents and desire to teach online?

I actually started teaching very early on because I thought there were too few tutorials online, and I wanted to share the few dance moves I knew with other people who, like myself, didn’t have the luxury of having a good dance school nearby to go to.

Back then I was more focused on improving myself and not so much on teaching so I only uploaded a few tutorials on YouTube. Once I improved my skills and gained more experience I decided to create the YouTube channel, Learn How To Dance, where my goal is to spread as much joy as possible through this wonderful thing called dance!

I guess you’ve been fortunate that your platform is based online at a time where people are having to stay at home. Have you noticed more people engaging with your content?

Yes, definitely. A lot of people have actually commented on my videos saying that they are just starting to learn how to dance for the first time because of all the free time that they now have.

I see that your most popular YouTube tutorial has over 8 million views – that is an incredible achievement. It must make you so happy to do what you love knowing it brings so much joy to millions of people?

Yes, I still can’t believe that there are so many people in the world who watch my videos – and actually enjoy and learn something from them! I’m so humbled by it, and I can’ tell you how grateful I am for it.

Now that you have successfully conquered the YouTube world, what comes next for Learn How To Dance?

I’m currently working on my very first dance course “Pop Dance Bootcamp” in collaboration with which I’m super excited about.

It’s a course for beginners, and it includes all the essential things you need when you’re a beginner. We’re planning to have it released mid July, and I can’t wait to see the feedback from the students!

Throughout the Coronavirus period, we have noticed a lot of fitness trainers taking their classes online in live sessions. Is this something you have thought about? I’m sure fans would love a chance to learn with you live.

I have definitely thought about it, but I haven’t tried it before, so I just need to figure out how to do it and what it requires. Hopefully, I can do that in the near future.

Bao, thank you so much for taking the time to speak to us today. We can’t wait to see what the future holds and are delighted to have you as a part of the Sportside family!

The pleasure is all mine! Thanks for letting me be part of the Sportside family!
