Being the best you can be – on and off the court

Background: Kieron Achara, 36. Born: Stirling. Retired basketball player. Career: London Olympics, 105 caps for GB, Glasgow Rocks.

Welcome to the Sportside family, Kieron. Who do you look to as a role model in life, and in sport?

My mum. Her hard work and drive to provide for my brother when times were tough is where I model my work ethic from. In sport I have many role models, anybody who has a passion, who is driven and committed to being the best they can be.

The best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Again, from my mum and that was to embrace my uniqueness. Being extremely tall and of colour was very different in Scotland and something I didn’t like at first. My mum helped me see that being different was not a bad thing but instead a strength.

Your crowning sporting achievement.?

I am proud of everything I have achieved and think the sum of the parts is what makes me most proud.

What is your life like now after international sport?

It is different, I get more quality time with my wife and young family. I recently finished my Masters degree in Leadership and Management and working with athletes to help assist them through and beyond sport.

I also work for a digital health and well-being company that uses videos of lived-experience to offer hope and signpost support. These are two areas I am extremely passionate about so the transition although different is still very much purpose driven, which makes it worthwhile to me.

What attracted you to Sportside?

It breaks down barriers, increases participation in sport and that has to be good for the mental and physical health of the nation.

Three guests at your perfect dinner party?

My wife and two children (Adelyn and Braylon)

Guilty pleasure?

Chocolate and CBeebies

What’s your next big goal?

My biggest goal remains the same as it was as a player – be the best I can be on and off the court. My direction is to inspire as many people as possible to live a more active/healthier lifestyle as well as help people/athletes reach their full potential inside and outside the sporting world.
